Any thoughts on the new Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold requirements?
GSUSA has released the requirements for the highest awards. The only work beside doing the project (which is a lot of hours) is to do one of the Journeys. I personally feel that this does not encompass what Juliette Gordon Low set out to do when GS was founded. How do you feel?
I have mixed feelings about the Journeys themselves. I understand that they take a different approach to Leadership than the previous recognitions. However, with all the changes to the programs over the last few years (including adding the Ambassador level), I believe National is trying too hard to find the "right" change without giving the previous changes a chance to work. Five or so years ago, we added the Studio 2B (and changed the Bronze, Silver and Gold requirements to incorporate that program). Now that everyone is getting used to those requirements, we are changing them again.
Admittedly I have only scratched the surface of the Journeys, but it sure feels like we're "dumbing down" the requirements (especially for the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards). I believe the success of the Girl Scouts is not contingent upon changing the program to appeal to the "modern girl" but rather refocusing on the rich traditions that have always appealed to the girls. We can't compete with all the options that girls have in their lives today, but we can offer them a program that allows them to connect to their mothers and grandmothers and share a rich heritage. I feel like we are quickly loosing that common ground.
